Excursion from Cajamarca

Today we go in a mini-bus to explore the countryside around Cajamarca.
These are the Ventanillas de Otuzco, or little windows of Otuzco, a citadel of funeral "windows" of the ancient Cajamarcans, and they're just 15 minutes north-east of the city.

Then we go on to the archaeological site of Cumbemayo where, in addition to these splendid rock formations, there are aqueducts:

As we walk around here this is what we find:
And this:
It's fascinating to see how they channelled their water into the city all those years ago.

Now we drive on through the countryside:
And more:
This is a typical Andean village.  I'd like to reiterate that most travellers to Peru  go to Cusco and Machu Picchu and all the other places in the south, because they're well known and miss this beautiful part of the country.
We'll continue our excursion later.  In the meantime, enjoy these photos.  You can find out more on our website, which will be completely redesigned over the next week or two to make it much more user friendly rather than pretty.
